The humanitarian project "Beta Humanitarian Help" was launched in 2013 by Dr. Daniel Sattler, head plastic surgeon at the Beta Clinic in Bonn, and aims to meet the enormous need for plastic surgeons in the developing world.
The team, consisting of plastic surgeons, general practitioners and anesthetists, has set itself the task of providing regular support in developing countries and giving people there access to urgently needed medical aid. During past missions in Peru, Nepal and Madagascar, complex injuries were treated and operations were carried out to a high standard. Tumors are mainly removed, skin transplants performed, burns corrected and patients with accidental and violent injuries treated.
The plastic surgery treatment of children is a particular priority for the team, as there are considerable deficits in care in this area. The children from crisis areas often have severe burns or deformities that can be successfully treated by the medical team on site. This mainly involves corrective surgery for scarring, disfigurements and certain functional impairments. Cleft lips and palates are also a common diagnosis in children and adolescents in the third world. Local people cannot afford surgery for these and other deformities. That is why the team wants to continue to be able to fly halfway around the world to operate on children in developing countries and thus give them a better future.
